It’s been a busy year here at BOC, from taking big steps in digitisation and reimagining how we do business to being at the forefront of hydrogen fuel developments and campaigning to help keep our staff safe as they travel home from work. Here are some of 2017’s highlights…

1. Reimagining gases

At the start of the year we pledged that 2017 was going to be all about being imaginative and innovative as we aim to generate more value for our customers. With a focus on digitalisation we’ve made changes to the way we engage with customers, embarked on new collaborations and strived to improve our product and service offerings.

Take a look at our digitalisation plans.

2. Hydrogen for the here and now

Hydrogen as a fuel source has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and we’ve been right there at the forefront. Our flagship Aberdeen hydrogen bus project services Europe’s largest hydrogen bus fleet and is the largest hydrogen bus station in the UK.

Take a look at some other exciting hydrogen projects.

3. Celebrating women in engineering

We pride ourselves on having a diverse workforce and to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day in June we spoke to Graduate Operations Engineer Dinusha Thedchanamoorthy. The 24-year-old said: “Women shouldn’t be put off by the stereotypical view of female engineers. When you get into the industry you’ll see that there are all types of women working in engineering.”

Read more about Dinusha’s experiences at BOC.

4. Growing demand for frozen fresh food

One of the big trends we’ve seen this year is the growing demand for frozen fruit and veg as time-poor, health-conscious consumers look for more convenient ways to get their 5-a-day. Advances in tech such as rapid cryogenic freezing and oscillating conveyor belts mean it’s much easier to get these products into supermarket freezers.

Find out which frozen veg’s sales are up a massive 120%

5. Saving the world one bee at a time

Honey bee numbers are dropping and as scientists look to reverse the trend by creating ‘hygienic colonies’ that have a better chance of survival against threats like the Varroa parasite.

Find out how our liquid nitrogen is being used to help save the bees

6. Advanced engineering 2017

Robotics, automation, Industry 4.0 – all big trends identified at this year’s Advanced Engineering 2017 show. We were there too, talking about the importance of welding data automation and our impressive new cloud-based process management tool – AVANTO™.

Here are our 5 key takeaways from the event

7. Getting staff home safely during Road Safety Week

Safety is a top priority for us, and not just during working hours. For Road Safety Week we launched our own campaign to encourage staff to stay safe on their journey home, whether they travel by car, bike or on foot.

8. Answering customer questions on cryogenic gas

We’re always happy to help customers find out more about our products and services and our Cryospeed Sales & Service Officers have to be ready for all kinds of queries when they’re making deliveries – even about their own holiday plans!

Find out some of the most common questions when it comes to our Cryospeed® liquid nitrogen products.

9. Upskilling welders

Welding companies are facing a ‘perfect storm’ when it comes to skills shortages, with many struggling with ageing workforces and keeping current staff’s skills up-to-date. With experienced staff sometimes proving resistant to new ways of doing things, we’ve got some top tips for getting their buy-in and involving them in the process.

Get top tips for getting traction on the shop floor.

10. Solving welding data headaches

Increasing compliance pressures mean that gathering, storing and accessing data about your welding processes has never been more important and digitising that data could be the key to making these large volumes of data more manageable and reducing the risk of human error.

Here are few things to consider before digitising your welding management

As you can see, it’s been a busy year here at BOC – we’re looking forward to more of the same in 2018.
