Construction and maintenance teams need to keep working outdoors when the sun’s gone down, but have long relied on diesel generators to power their temporary lighting.
Diesel generators are environmentally unfriendly because of their carbon and particulate emissions, and subject to strict health and safety conditions.
Employers have to conduct a risk-assessment and then put in place specific working practices to limit workers’ exposure to harmful emissions. Meanwhile, their noise pollution makes them unpopular with the neighbours.
But now there’s a new, greener and more cost-effective solution based on hydrogen. It brings together ground-breaking technology from BOC and TCP.
Introducing hydrogen-powered lighting
The Ecolite-TH2 is the world’s first commercial hydrogen fuel cell lighting tower. It’s powered by BOC’s HYMERA® fuel cell technology and includes 2 GENIE® lightweight hydrogen cylinders. And it’s compliant with Section 61 of the Control of Pollution Act, which relates to noise and light pollution, and ground contamination.
Compared to a traditional diesel-generator-powered lighting tower, the Ecolite-TH2 is a quiet and low-carbon solution to night-time working.
Better for the environment and your business
With no internal combustion engine, BOC’s hydrogen-powered generator emits less than 20g of Co2 per hour – that’s less than 1% of a diesel generator’s emissions, which are typically about 2.5kg of Co2 per hour. The hydrogen fuel cell also emits zero particulates.
Hydrogen power lighting has little impact on the environment, but other benefits too:
• It fits with the desire to look after the wellbeing of employees
• Hydrogen power lighting enables work in locations such as tunnels or underground, where emissions can be a problem
• The Ecolite-TH2 can cope with extreme temperatures – from minus10 degrees Celsius to 40 degrees Celsius
• It offers significant cost reductions compared to diesel generators – up to 75% for loads up to 150 watts
Suited to more locations
Because it’s virtually silent, the Ecolite-TH2 is ideal for wherever noise pollution must be avoided, including:
• built-up areas
• residential neighbourhoods
• near offices
Its hydrogen generator is also good for locations demanding zero risk of contamination, as there’s no chance of fuel seeping into the ground.
And light pollution is avoided because of its controllable and efficient LED light patterns.
User-friendly and automated
The Ecolite-TH2 is a lighting system that’s simple to operate.
The GENIE® lightweight hydrogen cylinders are easy to handle and give long and autonomous run times ─ lasting up to 45 hours per cylinder.
Dusk-to-dawn auto-switching is automated, meaning it can switch itself on at dusk and off at dawn.
