Q&A: What is BioLNG and how can it help your HGV fleet?

We asked Chris Hampton to tell us more about the new BioLNG fuel now offered by BOC and what it means for our customers.

Chris, tell us a little about your role in BOC’s Clean Fuels business.

As LNG Product Manager I have responsibility for all aspects of the LNG business, including the development of new products and services.  I’m also an active member of several transport and industry groups which work to promote the use of gas in transport.

What is BioLNG?

BioLNG is a sustainable government approved fuel that’s produced from the anaerobic digestion of organic waste. It’s a great alternative fuel for the HGV market, because it’s vastly cleaner, cheaper and quieter than diesel.

How does BioLNG differ from LNG?

We’ve been supplying HGV operators with LNG for a number of years as part of our commitment to cleaner fuels.  BioLNG offers all of the benefits of LNG, however it has the added advantage of being a renewable fuel source, unlike LNG which is still a fossil fuel.

While LNG produces up to 20% less CO2 than diesel, with BioLNG the CO2 savings can be as high as 95%. It’s also considerably lower cost than diesel – so the benefits are clear.

Why is this increased CO2 saving important for the HGV sector?

Research shows that transport currently produces 27% of the UK’s greenhouse gases – the largest amount of any industrial sector. So, the Government has challenged HGV operators to reduce their CO2 emissions by 15% by 2020.

Is BioLNG suitable for all HGV vehicles?

BioLNG is suitable for any HGV that can run on LNG. This includes both dual fuel vehicles and dedicated LNG vehicles, such as those produced by Scania, Volvo and Iveco.

If you’re an existing LNG user what’s the process for switching to BioLNG?

The fuel in the tank won’t change. Vehicles will continue to be supplied with LNG in the usual way. An equal quantity of biomethane will be injected into the UK Gas Grid to balance the quantity of fossil LNG used by the vehicle as transport fuel. By balancing the amount of fossil LNG used with biomethane, we’re dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of HGVs.

Having been part of BOC’s BioLNG project, what does this development mean to you?

It has been very rewarding to be part of this project. Being able to offer customers BioLNG as an alternative fuel is a significant step forward in helping the HGV transport sector reduce its carbon footprint.
